Before my husband, Mike, and I had kids, we would take our 2 Labs on mini weekend adventures exploring as many parks and hiking trails in the area as we could find. Labrador Retrievers are energetic dogs and we had to find ways to tire them out. Our male yellow Lab, Dixon, didn’t calm down until he turned ten. Holly, our female black Lab, was only a little calmer than Dixon.
One of our most frequented trails was dog-friendly Darlington Trail. It is located in Middletown Township, Delaware County, PA. Take Rt. 1 south past the Wawa Dairies and turn right onto Darlington Road. A parking lot will be on the right.
Chester Creek
Our labs love the water of the Chester Creek which the trail follows for several hundred yards. The trail gives a good mix of wooded areas, open farmland and meadows. It is easy for kids to walk and we don’t have to go far at all to see the Chester Creek. It is right off the parking lot area. The entire loop is just under 3 miles but we did not venture too far down the trail
because the kids wanted to look under the rocks by the water.
Overall, this will be a trail we will stop at again over the summer when it gets warm When we visited in late March, we did not see anyone but I would assume the trail is used often in the summer. Keep that in mind if you choose to take your dog off-leash. It was also a cold day so keeping Holly, our Lab, out of the water was not too difficult. While she likes the water, she doesn’t like being too cold. There is enough of a sandy bank to keep her happy along the creek.
